UK Catalyst Research and Testing Center

The Catalysis Research and Testing program, under the direction of Burt Davis, has been investigating the catalytic conversion of coal synthesis gas to chemicals through the process of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Substantial funding provided by the Department of Energy and the impressive progress made by the research group has helped to establish a facility for catalyst testing and evaluation that is without peer, and that has received worldwide notice. In recognition of the prominence of this program, and of its growing industrial support, we have taken the step of recognizing it as a Center for Catalyst Research and Testing (CCRT) within the Center for Applied Energy Research.

The focal point of the center, housed within the Catalysis Research and Testing program, continues to be defining scientific principles involved in catalysis as well as applying these scientific principles to the many applications of catalysts in industry. The strength of this dual focus has been the foundation of numerous beneficial interactions with industrial, governmental and academic organizations. Some of the results of these interactions have been the development of an international reputation for the Center as a problem solver with over 400 publications.

The Center strives to be a vehicle for the multidisciplinary interaction of industrial and academic scientists and provides unique educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as for postdoctoral researchers. The Catalysis Center has actively participated in the co-op program of the Universities of Kentucky and Louisville for many years. The Center has also become a facility for collaboration with international as well as U.S. scientists through the CAER's visiting scientist program.

Some of the research areas of the Catalyst Research and Testing Center include the following areas:
